Florida: Online Private School and Homeschool Regulations/Laws

Florida state legislature has minimal regulations for private school students. Enlightium Academy meets the existing state requirements and has high standards in areas where state law may have none, such as teacher certification and organization accreditation.

5 Must Have Facts About Homeschooling In Florida pEnlightium Academy is a private Christian online school, but since students learn from home, many school district superintendents consider Enlightium Academy to be a homeschool. This is why it is very important when speaking to your local school district superintendent to note that Enlightium Academy is an accredited, College-prep private school, which should satisfy Florida state requirements. Resources for homeschooling requirements in the state of Florida can be found at the bottom of this article.

It is optional for a private school to be accredited in the state of Florida. There are, however, several benefits to being enrolled in an accredited school.

Enlightium Academy is accredited by AdvancED and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). These accrediting agencies hold Enlightium Academy to the highest standards in areas including curriculum, faculty credentials, and student expectations.

Verification of Enrollment and Record-Keeping

Private schools are required to keep records of student enrollment and attendance.

Families enrolled in Enlightium Academy can reach out to their student’s counselor for a Verification of Enrollment, also known as a Certification of Enrollment or Proof of School Enrollment. Read our article “10 Common Questions about the Verification of Enrollment Form” to learn more about this form.

Evidence of Age (Grades Pre-K and Kindergarten)

Parents/guardians of students in grades Pre-K and Kindergarten must provide evidence of the child’s age prior to being admitted in the school.

For families enrolling in Enlightium Academy, the student’s age is included in the enrollment form. Typically, the enrollment form satisfies this requirement, but if the student’s local school district superintendent requires additional evidence of age, the family can provide Enlightium Academy with a birth certificate or, according to Florida’s legislature, a certificate of baptism.

Schedule Requirements

Students in Florida are required to attend 180 school days or at least 170 school days if the hourly equivalent matches 180 school days.

Enlightium Academy’s school calendar has 180 school days, so students who attend the full year meet this requirement.

Teacher Requirements

Teacher certification is optional for private schools in Florida. There are, however, countless benefits to faculty certification. Certified teachers are content experts in their field which gives them a distinct advantage in teaching. Knowing the big picture in a field of study will influence the scope and sequence of that course. Also, most certified teachers have been equipped for teaching by studying educational psychology, instructional methods, and helping low achieving students.

As a part of Enlightium Academy’s dual accreditation, teachers are state and ACSI certified. Several faculty members have Masters degrees in their fields. Learn more at EA’s Our Teachers page.

5 Must Have Facts About Homeschooling In Florida iCurriculum Requirements

The curriculum used by private schools and home instruction programs is not overseen by the state or local school district.

In regards to a science curriculum, dissection is a topic regulated by Florida. K–12 students may not perform a dissection on a living mammalian vertebrate or bird. Students may be exempt from needing to perform a dissection on a non-living mammal or bird with parent/guardian written request, likely to the local school district superintendent.

As of March 2019, one Enlightium Academy course has the dissection of a non-living animal. Families can request a virtual alternative if they are unable to or prefer not to conduct the dissection.

Annual Assessment

Florida does not require a standardized assessment for students.

Enlightium Academy is dual accredited by ACSI and AdvancEd, both of which require an annual assessment, which is why Enlightium Academy has teamed with Pearson to provide students the Stanford 10 annual assessment. The test is taken in the Spring and is available to currently enrolled students in grades 3–10.
