Your information is important to you. Your résumé, creative side-project, and English essay all are vital to you at one time or another. Protect it.

Backup important information.

On most computers, you can store files locally. Locally means on your computer, so if your computer breaks or is lost, your locally stored files are gone. This is why it is important to back up files that will hurt if you lose them.

There are two ways to backup files:

  • Purchase an external hard drive or flash drive and copy/paste the files there
  • Store the files remotely

Store the files remotely.

Storing the files remotely means that they are stored in the cloud. Free, secure cloud storage is readily available; anyone with a Gmail account receives 15 gb of cloud storage for free.

Pros to storing remotely:

  • Files can be accessed from any device with access to the Internet
  • Resources such as Google Docs allow the user to make updates to a single file over time, so you don’t have to save the files as “Version 2”, “Version 3”, etc.

Cons to storing remotely:

  • If the server is down, you will not be able to access the files
  • If you do not have access to the Internet, you may not be able to access the files
