National Honor Society

The National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society seek to recognize outstanding students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization for students in grades 10–12, while the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) recognizes students in grades 7–9. Selection for the NHS and NJHS is based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Candidacy

In the Fall and Spring, students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility.

To be eligible for the NHS, a student must have:

  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.7
  • Be on track to finish the school year on time
  • Have been enrolled at Enlightium for at least one full semester
  • Have minimal behavior reports

To be eligible for the NJHS, a student must have

  • A GPA of 3.5
  • Have current progress
  • Be on track to finish the school year on time
  • Have been enrolled at Enlightium for at least one full semester
  • Have minimal behavior reports

Students who are eligible candidates shall be notified and asked to complete and submit the National Honor or National Junior Honor Society application for further consideration for selection.

Selection

The application packets require a great deal of work, including one full-length essay/report and two well-written short narratives. The nominee is given approximately one month to complete the packet and submit it as one complete document via email to the advisor. In order for a nominee to make it to the selection process, the advisor must receive the completed packet, all character references, and the counselor fact form before the deadline noted in the packet. The character references are the only part of the process that will not accompany the packet, as it is requested that the character references be emailed directly from the referencer to the advisor.

One week before the selection meeting, the advisor will run an additional audit on all nominees’ records. Enlightium Academy has a selection committee made of staff and faculty; there must be a minimum of five voting members present to discuss and select candidates. Once the selection committee has thoroughly considered each candidate, which can take up to a month, the advisor will email each candidate a selected or not-selected letter. The candidates that were selected will receive a welcome packet, while the non-selected candidates will be given recommendations from the committee on how to improve their application in case they are nominated again in the future.

Induction

A week after the selection of candidates there will be a live-streamed induction ceremony; selected candidates will receive instructions during the ceremony. Selected candidates who have submitted all requirements will receive their membership certificate within five business days.

Membership

With the membership certificate, the candidates will receive additional information and instructions outlining the requirements of all Enlightium NHS/NJHS members in regard to participation, meetings, community service, and more.
