As a public health and nutrition professional, I am often asked, “What is the best diet?” People understand that there is a connection between what you eat and your health. Parents especially are eager to provide the best they can for their growing children. My philosophy is simple. Whatever your family eats should meet your family’s health and nutrition needs, respect your resources (e.g. time, money, energy, and skills), and of course, taste good!
I want to encourage you to take a broad view of what it means to make family budget meals. When I think of family budget meals, I think of the money, time, skills, and other resources it takes to feed a family. These components are all related, and I think it is important to keep all of them in mind. Before I share my thoughts on the financial side of making family budget meals, I first want to talk about budgeting with your time, skills, and other resources.
So what is the best diet? The one that includes enough safe and nutritious food for people to live healthy, actives lives. The best diet for you and your family is the one that works with your health goals, budget, culture, and preferences. It supports a healthy, happy home. And there’s no one way it should look!
