What Texas Families Need to Know About Enrolling at Enlightium Academy
Enlightium Academy is accredited by Cognia and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Texas does not directly register, approve, or accredit private schools through the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Instead, TEA recognizes private school accreditation through organizations such as the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission (TEPSAC), which recognizes ACSI. Enlightium Academy of Texas also participates in the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program as a private school.
Students enrolled full-time at Enlightium Academy receive their education through an accredited private school rather than enrolling in an independent homeschool program. Enlightium maintains student academic records, provides instructional oversight, and issues report cards, transcripts, and diplomas upon completion of graduation requirements.

What This Means for Texas Families
Students enrolled full-time at Enlightium Academy:
- Are formally enrolled students of an accredited private school;
- Receive instruction and academic oversight through Enlightium Academy;
- Complete their education from home through Enlightium's flexible learning programs;
- Receive academic records, report cards, transcripts, and, upon completion of graduation requirements, a diploma from Enlightium Academy; and
- Are not automatically considered independent homeschool students simply because their instruction takes place at home.
Families who independently homeschool, enroll only part-time, or use a curriculum without full-time private school enrollment may be subject to different requirements.
Learning at Enlightium Academy
Enlightium Academy offers online and book-based Christian education with flexible learning options and support from teachers, counselors, and educational staff. Students follow Enlightium's academic expectations and school calendar, with parent involvement varying based on their selected program.
After enrollment, Enlightium works with families to establish the student's academic plan, course placement, and graduation pathway, as applicable.
State Educational Funds
Enlightium Academy of Texas is a participating private school in the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program. Students whose enrollment at Enlightium Academy is verified for TEFA can use those funds to cover eligible expenses such as tuition. Families can visit our Knowledge Base or the TEFA website to learn more about this program.
As of the publication of this blog, families who selected TEFA’s homeschool option instead of the private school option may not use those funds at Enlightium Academy.
Notification to Local District
Texas does not require families enrolling their children in a private school to submit a separate notification to the state or local school district.
However, families transferring from a public school must formally withdraw their student. The school district may request written confirmation of the student's new educational placement. Enlightium Academy can provide a Verification of Enrollment letter upon request to confirm the student's private school enrollment. For additional information, visit the Texas Education Agency.
Academic Calendar Requirements
Texas public schools are required to provide at least 75,600 minutes of school operation annually, including instructional time, recesses, and intermissions. Private schools follow their applicable accreditation standards and school policies.
Enlightium Academy's school calendar includes 180 school days (approximately 210 days with summer school). Additionally, students have access to their online coursework 24/7 for most of the school year, including weekends and holidays, allowing flexibility while meeting Enlightium's academic expectations.

Age Requirements
Texas compulsory attendance laws generally apply to children ages six through eighteen. However, students attending a qualifying private school, such as Enlightium, that includes a study of good citizenship, are exempt from public school compulsory attendance requirements.
Students enrolled full-time at Enlightium Academy fulfill their educational responsibilities through the school's academic program and are expected to follow Enlightium's established attendance and instructional requirements.

Instructor Qualifications
Texas does not require private school teachers to hold a Texas teaching certificate. However, accredited private schools must meet the instructor qualification standards established by their accrediting organizations.
As part of Enlightium Academy's dual accreditation through Cognia and ACSI, Enlightium teachers are required to hold a bachelor's degree and be state and/or ACSI-certified. Many of our teachers hold master's degrees, and some hold doctoral degrees in their teaching fields.

Required Subjects
Texas requires public schools to provide instruction in core subjects, including English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Private schools establish their own curricula, subject to applicable accreditation standards. However, Texas law requires qualifying private schools to include a study of good citizenship for students to be exempt from public school compulsory attendance requirements.
In accordance with Texas Education Code §25.086(a)(1), Enlightium Academy incorporates the study of good citizenship throughout its curriculum rather than offering it as a standalone course. Through subjects such as Digital Citizenship, History, Social Studies, Government, and Bible, students learn about civic responsibility, the rights and duties of citizenship, respect for authority and the law, integrity, leadership, and service to their communities, all taught from a biblical worldview. These courses are assigned by Enlightium's academic counselors based on each student's grade level and educational needs. High school students also complete courses required for graduation.
Standardized Assessment
Texas does not impose a general annual standardized testing requirement on all private school students. However, students in grades 3–12 who participate in the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program must complete an approved assessment each year.
Approved assessments available through Enlightium or its educational guidance include:
- Grades 3–8: Iowa Assessments and IXL Assessment
- Grades 9–12: Iowa Assessments, SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and applicable IXL Assessment
Students not participating in TEFA follow Enlightium's regular assessment requirements based on their grade level and academic program.
Immunization or Exemption
Texas requires students enrolling in public and private schools to provide documentation of required immunizations or a recognized exemption.
Texas allows medical exemptions and exemptions for reasons of conscience, including religious beliefs. Families can review the Texas Department of State Health Services for current immunization requirements and exemption procedures.
Portfolio / Recordkeeping
Texas does not require families with students enrolled in private schools to maintain a separate homeschool portfolio. However, keeping copies of academic records is recommended, particularly when transferring schools or preparing for college. Texas public school districts may review transcripts, curriculum, student work, or assessments when determining placement for students transferring from private schools.
Enlightium Academy maintains students' official academic records, including grades, report cards, and transcripts. Families may also retain copies of:
- Attendance and progress: Progress reports provided by Enlightium.
- Curriculum information: Course descriptions and curriculum overviews.
- Academic plans: Course placement and graduation plans provided by Enlightium counselors.
- Assessment results: Standardized test scores and academic evaluations.
- Academic awards: Qualifying students receive certificates for the Honor Roll, Scholar's List, Dean's List, Outstanding Improvement, and the Presidential Award.
- Achievements: Academic awards, certificates, and extracurricular accomplishments.
