10 Good Bible Verses to Help Teens Stay Strong in Today's World

Being a teenager can be tough, especially in today's world, where there are so many challenges and pressures. It's important for students to have a strong foundation to lean on during these difficult times. As parents and mentors, it's our responsibility to guide them toward sources of strength and inspiration. With this in mind, I have compiled a list of ten Bible verses that can help your student stay strong and grounded despite the challenges he or she may face.

Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

We must remember that this verse was written to the surviving Israelite exiles who were banished to Babylon (Jeremiah 29:1-2). The Lord was ensuring that they were not abandoned. When things looked bleak, the Lord was reminding his chosen people of his presence and grace. This verse does not mean that life is easy. Rather, it reminds us that God has a plan that goes beyond our present suffering.

Joshua 1:9

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Your student will face many fears and uncertainties as they navigate through life. This verse reminds us that we are not alone, no matter where our journey takes us. It also reminds us of the power of courage in the face of fear. Joshua and the Israelites certainly had fear, but the Lord reminded them that their courage to follow his direction would take them into their inheritance—the promised land.

Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."

In the “age of information,” it is tempting to let what we “know” about the world dictate what we believe about God. This verse encourages us not to lean on our own understanding of the world, which is flawed because of sin, but to see things as they are according to Holy Scripture. Our “own understanding” tells us that people do not get out of graves. Yet, Jesus Christ did just that. Are we going to let God’s self-revelation establish our worldview, or are we going to let our worldview establish our understanding of God?

Philippians 4:13

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

This verse is often misunderstood. It does not mean “anything is possible for any person.” God is not our genie in a bottle. When read in context, this verse describes Paul’s learned ability to be content in Christ, whether he is suffering or thriving. Because our strength comes from Christ, we can remain joyful even through sorrow. This is an undefeatable truth that can sustain your student through any hardship.

1 Timothy 4:12

"Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity."

As teenagers, it's common to feel underestimated or overlooked because of our age. But this verse encourages teens to set a positive example for others through their words, actions, and values. When I was a teenager, my sister (an artist) gave me this verse as a painting, and it hung in my room, reminding me daily that the Lord can use people of every age.

Isaiah 40:30-31

"Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted, but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

This verse shows that even when we feel tired or weak, God will give us the strength to keep going. Encourage your teen to trust in God's timing and lean on His strength when they feel overwhelmed.

Micah 6:8

"He has told you, oh man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Sometimes we overcomplicate life. With their whole life ahead of them, your student may struggle with fear over their “calling.” But we know from Scripture that living according to the Word of God is rather simple. Be kind, be just, and walk humbly with God. If we, by the grace of God, achieve those things, we will live well!

Jeremiah 17:7-8a

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is in the Lord. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green.”

I might expect this verse to read, “Blessed is she with great health insurance, for when the cancer diagnosis comes, she can afford the best healthcare.” Or, “Blessed is he with enough money to own multiple cars, for when one breaks down, he always has the other.” This is how we tend to view life in the West. We strive to minimize suffering through our own power as far as possible. The truth of the matter is that no amount of money or success can bring peace and joy in the midst of suffering. Only trust in the Lord can do that. If we trust in the Lord, we do not wither when the bad news comes. We do the opposite. We bear fruit.

Isaiah 41:10

“Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, and I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

This verse reminds us that God is God, and we are not. As fragile human beings, there are many things that we might fear. Thankfully, we also have the God of the universe who promises to strengthen, help, and uphold us.

Romans 8:38-39

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

This verse serves as a reminder that nothing can ever separate us from the love of God. Encourage your student to remember that they are loved unconditionally by their Creator, no matter what challenges they may face.

As your student journeys through life, it will be tempting to view adversity and suffering as evidence that the Lord is not there. These verses show us two things. First, the presence and promises of God do not depend on our circumstances. The Israelites must have been tempted to give up on God and to find others, but the Lord assured them of his plan. In our own lives, we will suffer. What will our response be? Will we assume God is not there, or will we trust that his redeeming purposes are accomplished in our lives even when we do not feel his presence? Second, it is the Lord that provides our peace, strength, and security. These things cannot last apart from God. All the securities you provide yourself could vanish in the next personal, regional, or global crisis. So, what will we do? Let our roots go out by the stream.
