How to Effectively Handle Disrespectful and Disruptive Situations

As a coordinator or teacher of an Alliance Program school, you have the responsibility of guiding students to be successful in both their academics and conduct discipline. But what do you do when students misbehave? Dealing with student behavior can be a challenge. By understanding why students display such behavior and knowing how to approach them, you can effectively handle disrespectful or disruptive situations. Read on for tips on how to engage in a productive and meaningful way!

Set Expectations

It’s important to establish clear expectations ahead of time. A Student Orientation Course should help with this if you would like to go through it with them. Make sure all students know what is expected of them and that they understand the consequences if they do not follow these expectations, both from Enlightium’s perspective and your school’s.

Identify What is Causing the Behaviors

Next, it’s important to gain insight into why some students misbehave in school. Common causes can include a lack of understanding of expectations, feelings of insecurity, or feeling overwhelmed with the demands they are asked to meet.

By taking the time to determine what is causing the problem, you can then work towards helping by creating an environment that fosters growth and development. Remember that most misbehaviors might be caused by miscommunication, and once you are able to identify the cause, it will be easier to show empathy and identify your next steps.

When misbehavior escalates to the office level, the school counselor or principal should reach out to the parents to address such a behavior. In collaboration with parents, the student, and school, a plan of action should be developed and followed on a weekly basis to help the student to get on track academically and behaviorally.

Follow Through With Consequences

It's also important to set consequences for unacceptable behavior. Make sure they receive clear feedback on how their actions are inappropriate and how to correct them moving forward. It takes proactive steps towards creating an atmosphere where all students can thrive without disruption or disrespectfulness. Understanding why some students behave in certain ways helps you respond appropriately while instilling respect and encouraging positive behaviors among all of your students.
