Similar to the GED and HiSET exams, the TASC exam (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) is a high school equivalency test.
In the vast majority of cases, students should pursue a high school diploma. Obtaining a diploma often leads to higher earnings in adulthood and demonstrates to employers that the individual has the ability to tackle and overcome challenges. However, for teenagers who are at least 16 years of age, not currently enrolled in any high school, and do not have a high school diploma, the TASC may be available.
Like other high school equivalency tests, students who take the TASC are allowed two retests per year. Some states allow students to take the exam up to three times annually. These tests also enable students to attend colleges or obtain jobs that require a high school diploma.
One way that the TASC exam is different from other equivalency exams is that it is available in additional locations other than testing centers. State-approved testing centers may include other local schools and even correctional facilities. You can see a full list of states that accept the TASC below. TASC offers a helpful comparison chart between the TASC Test, the GED, and the HiSET.
The TASC is considered more accommodating to English-Language Learners (ELL) and special needs adults. They will provide exams online, in regular or large print, audio, and braille, as well as in English and Spanish.
You may qualify to take the TASC if you are at least 16 years of age, not currently enrolled in any high school, do not have a high school diploma, and are a legal resident of a state in which the TASC exam is offered. The age requirements may vary from state to state.
As of July 2024, states that accept the TASC test are California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
The TASC exam is comprised of five sections:
These do not have to be taken all at once, but it is highly recommended.
Yes. Official preparation materials are available in both English and Spanish for approximately $22. There are also printable practice tests available.
According to the TASC website, exam costs vary from state to state and also depend on testing centers. You will be able to see accurate pricing after creating an account through TASC and registering for an exam.
