In the vast majority of cases, students should pursue a high school diploma. Earning a diploma typically results in higher wages as an adult and lets employers know that the worker can overcome a challenge. For some students, earning a high school diploma is a challenge. If, after much discussion and prayer, a family determines that earning a high school diploma will not work for their student, they can consider alternatives.
There are some instances where receiving a HiSET is in the best interest of the student. The HiSET is an exam that provides students with a degree equivalent to a high school diploma. It is, however, more rigorous in nature than the GED. Below are some common questions about how to receive a HiSET; any student interested in pursuing the HiSET should speak to his or her counselor before making that decision.
Both exams will provide you with a degree that is considered by most to be equivalent to a high school degree. However, some employers, colleges, and the military may not accept them as an equivalent.
You must schedule either test prior to arriving at a testing center. Both programs are willing to provide accommodations during the test for students who have disabilities or health needs.
There are a few major similarities and differences between the GED and the HiSET that may help you decide which test best fits your needs.

To many employers or post-secondary schools, all degree equivalency programs are equal in value. However, it is always beneficial to reach out to your potential employer or school and ask which is their preference.
There are many study materials available for the HiSET. You can find study guides online.
At Enlightium Academy, students receive their high school diploma by earning a minimum of 22–24 credits between grades 9–12. The number of credits depends on which year they enrolled at Enlightium and if they are working toward a standard or an honors diploma. For students with unique situations due to missing credits or multiple failing grades, our counselors are available for consultation to determine if our school is the right fit for you.
Since 2003, Enlightium faculty and staff have served partner schools, hybrid, online, and homeschool K-12 students. Ms. Benedict graduated with a Master of Science degree in School Counseling in 2019. During her time there, she became invested in working with high school students on social-emotional issues, particularly anxiety, and post-secondary planning. She began working with Enlightium Academy in 2019. She is state and ACSI-certified.
Ms. Benedict graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a minor in English. While she was in the business world, she began volunteering with the youth program at her church and teaching Junior Achievement classes in local elementary schools. She believes in fostering nurturing, encouraging relationships with students and parents, and loves seeing students grow through cooperation and learning self-advocacy.
In her free time, Ms. Benedict loves taking long walks with Hank, her golden retriever, reading, spending time with her friends and family, writing, baking, and trying new foods and recipes.
