When you decide that public or private school may no longer be the best fit for your child, you move from simply following the standard educational path to intentionally choosing a different one. While this transition can feel both empowering and intimidating, taking the right steps can help make the process much smoother.
Although online learning and homeschooling have become increasingly common, some schools and districts may still be resistant to families choosing alternative educational options.
Occasionally, parents report feeling discouraged from withdrawing their child or are led to believe the process is more difficult than it actually is. If this happens, remember that families have the legal right to pursue alternative education options, including online learning and homeschooling.
When speaking with your current school, ask about:
Understanding the school's process upfront can help prevent unnecessary delays.
Before transitioning, familiarize yourself with your state's educational requirements.
Every state has different regulations regarding homeschooling and private online education, so it is important to understand what may be required of your family.
As you research, create a checklist of any applicable requirements, such as:
Having a written checklist will help ensure nothing is overlooked during the transition.
Once you understand your state's requirements, you can begin preparing for your student's online education experience.
One of the most important responsibilities for families is maintaining organized records of student work and academic progress.
Depending on your state, you may be required to keep:
Even if your state does not require extensive record-keeping, maintaining organized records can be extremely beneficial, especially when applying to colleges or transferring schools in the future. For more information about transitioning from homeschool to college, check out our guides.
It is also important to remember that if you move to another state, you will be subject to that state's educational requirements.
Consider asking the following questions:
If your student will be attending an online school, ask whether curriculum demonstrations, trial lessons, or sample courses are available.
Before leaving your current school, obtain copies of your student's academic records.
These may include:
Most schools will ultimately require official records; however, obtaining unofficial copies can often help speed up the enrollment process while waiting for official documents to arrive.
Once you have enrolled with your new school, completing required tasks as quickly as possible will help keep the enrollment process moving smoothly.
Common enrollment requirements may include:
Complete all enrollment forms and if required, assessments as soon as possible.
Be sure to provide information about:
Providing complete information helps the school better support your student.
Ask the school for an estimated timeline so you know when your student can expect to begin coursework.
Obtain any required or recommended materials, such as:
Read through any materials provided by the school, including:
If your state requires notification of educational changes, be sure to submit any necessary paperwork.
Many private and online schools can provide proof of enrollment or other documentation needed to satisfy state requirements.
Transitioning from a traditional school to an online learning environment can seem overwhelming at first, but with proper preparation and organization, it can be a smooth and positive experience.
By understanding your state's requirements, communicating effectively with both your current and future schools, and staying organized throughout the process, you can confidently move forward with an educational path that best supports your child's needs.
