What are Work Samples and Do I Need to Provide Them?

When high school students (grades 9-12) transition from homeschooling to Enlightium Academy, one of the most common questions we receive is: Why are work samples required?

Enlightium Academy recognizes parent-issued homeschool transcripts as documentation of a student's homeschool education. When homeschool credits are requested for inclusion on an official Enlightium transcript, those credits become part of Enlightium's academic record. To ensure accurate placement and recordkeeping, our academic team reviews supporting documentation before awarding transfer credit. The work sample review process described in this article applies to homeschool coursework for which high school credit (generally grades 9–12) is being requested on an official Enlightium Academy transcript.

Why Are Work Samples Needed?

Because transfer credits become part of Enlightium Academy's official academic record, our academic team must review supporting documentation before awarding credit. When a school official’s* signature is not present on the homeschool transcript, work samples are the most common form of documentation used to evaluate previously completed homeschool courses for potential transfer credit.

*A school official's signature on the homeschool transcript indicates that coursework has already been reviewed through a portfolio review, umbrella school process, accredited program, or similar educational oversight. When such verification is available, additional documentation requirements may differ. Depending on the circumstances, Enlightium may request additional documentation beyond work samples, including course descriptions, reading lists, portfolios, grade reports, or other materials that help verify prior coursework.

Do All Students Need to Submit Work Samples?

The work sample review process is generally only necessary when homeschool coursework is being evaluated for inclusion on an official Enlightium Academy transcript.

Students who do not plan to graduate from Enlightium Academy may not need their homeschool coursework reviewed through this process. In those cases, Enlightium transcripts typically include only courses completed through Enlightium Academy, while the receiving school determines how homeschool coursework and credits will be evaluated and applied.

Requirements for homeschool records, graduation documentation, and credit evaluation vary by state and educational institution. Although Enlightium may not require a homeschool coursework review in these situations, other schools, colleges, scholarship organizations, or state educational agencies may have their own documentation or verification requirements.

At Enlightium Academy, our goal is to make the transition process as smooth as possible while ensuring that every student receives fair and accurate academic credit for their prior learning experiences.

How Many Work Samples Are Sufficient?

In most cases, students should submit a minimum of three work samples per course listed on the homeschool transcript, and ensure each is a different assignment, project, test, or activity. The goal is to provide a variety of evidence showing consistent student engagement and understanding throughout the course. For example, three completed questions from the same math worksheet count as one work sample, not three.

What Qualifies as a Work Sample?

Work samples should demonstrate the student’s original work and thought process. Acceptable examples include:

• Completed worksheets
• Tests or quizzes
• Essays or research papers
• Projects with written explanations or student-created components
• Lab reports
• Written responses
• Problem-solving work showing steps and calculations

Strong work samples typically include:

• Written answers
• Explanations and analysis
• Calculations and problem-solving steps
• Evidence of project development
• Independent student thinking

What Does Not Qualify?

The following items do not provide enough evidence for credit evaluation:

• Blank worksheets
• Answer keys only
• Instructional materials without student responses
• Notes copied directly from textbooks or teacher slides
• Parent-created summaries of coursework
• Grade reports without attached student work

Ultimately, the purpose of work samples is to demonstrate mastery and active student participation in the course material.

File Submission Requirements

To help evaluate documents efficiently, the following guidelines are recommended when submitting work samples to Enlightium:

• Submit all samples for each subject in one single file per subject (PDF format preferred).
• Ensure every page clearly includes the:
  
  • Student’s full name
  • Grade level at the time the work was completed
  • Course or subject title
• Pages should be legible and organized in the correct order.
• If submitting photos of work, images must be clear and easy to read.

What About Offline Electives?

For electives completed offline, such as Physical Education, Fine Arts, or music instruction, families may submit visual documentation instead of written assignments.

Examples include:

• Photos of a student participating in sports practice for Physical Education
• Videos of a student playing an instrument for Fine Arts
• Images of completed art projects or performances

These submissions should still demonstrate active participation and skill development related to the course.

Additional Considerations

Please keep the following in mind during the evaluation process:

• Work samples should match the academic level being claimed (for example, high school-level work for high school credit).
• Incomplete assignments may not provide enough evidence for credit approval.
• Additional documentation may be requested if submitted samples do not adequately demonstrate mastery.
